Christ Church College

Information

|
Incorporating Oxford Cathedral and the scene for more than one movie, Christ Church is perhaps the most famous Oxford college. The large hall, libraries, and the cathedral itself are very old buildings. It was founded by the famous Cardinal Wolsey, master of Magdalen College, in 1525, on land that Wolsey had acquired from a local abbey, but construction was interrupted by Wolsey falling out of favour with the King. Henry VIII took over Wolsey’s land, and completed the construction of the college. The college was paid for by money from the dissolved monasteries. The famous Tom Tower, built by Christopher Wren, always rings 105 times at 9pm each evening, to signal the closing of the gates for all Oxford colleges. The college was the seat of Charles I and his court during the English Civil War. Many Royalist statues and tombs can be found near the college. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious colleges in Oxford University.
