Lincoln College was founded by Richard Fleming, the Bishop of Lincoln in 1427. It was initially founded to train people against the ideas of John Wyclif. Its founder said that it was to be ‘'a little college of true students of theology who would defend the mysteries of Scripture against those ignorant laymen who profaned with swinish snouts its most holy pearls.’ It became a center of Methodist ideals, as John Wesley, a leading Methodist, was a fellow there. The college still preserves ‘the Wesley room, which contains a display of items associated with Wesley. The college was also to appoint a Jew, Samuel Alexander, to be a fellow of the college in 1882. In the hall is a portrait of Rector Tatham, the man who preached such a long sermon that the only person who remained in the room by the end was dead!
