The Pitt rivers museum is a world famous collection of archaeological and anthropological items, given to the University of Oxford by the influential general Pitt Rivers, who had collected the 18,000 items initially given on his travels in the army. He was fascinated with archaeology himself, and was equally eager to share his interest with the world, so he donated his collection to Oxford University, to turn into a museum. The museum has expanded, with over 500,000 exhibits, mainly donated by explorers. The collection includes an amazing collection of artifacts from Hawaii and other pacific islands. There are also exhibits from Africa, America, and Japan. There is something of interest from just about every part of the world. The collection is arranged by type, so, for example, musical instruments from all over the world are grouped together so that people can compare them. The museum also has an ambient Victorian atmosphere. Here is a quote from Pitt Rivers himself:
“The knowledge of the facts of evolution, and of the process of gradual development, is the one great knowledge that we have to inculcate, whether in natural history or the arts and institutions of mankind; and this knowledge can be taught in museums." - General Pitt-Rivers
