  Trinity College

Information
Trinity College was founded by Oxfordshire born Sir Thomas Pope, Treasurer Henry VIII during the dissolution of the monasteries, in 1555, to ensure that he was remembered after his death. It was built on the site of Durham college, which had been a college for monks, and was destroyed with the monasteries. The library is the only surviving feature of Durham. It is surrounded by an open iron fence, which sets it apart from other, walled colleges. The four famous statues on the west tower represent Astronomy, Geometry, Theology and Medicine. Initially, all associated with the college had to remain celibate and take religious vows.

Interesting Fact
According to legend, the Great Gates of Trinity College on Broad Street will never be opened until a Stuart sits again on the throne of England.
